Neurological services offered
Neurological conditions can affect people in a number of ways. Our neurological experts strive to address as many conditions as possible, offering compassionate support and a wide range of personalized treatment.
Stroke care program
“Brain attacks” also known as cerebrovascular accidents, are serious and can be life-threatening. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, we provide the highest level of care — including rapid diagnosis and treatment for some of the most complex cases.
Our neurologists offer several forms of treatment, depending on the type of stroke you have experienced and the severity of your condition.
Stroke care
Our neurospecialists are ready and equipped to treat all types of strokes. The three main types that many people experience are:
- Ischemic strokes — The most common type of stroke, caused by a blood clot or fatty deposit that gets lodged in a blood vessel preventing blood flow to the brain.
- Hemorrhagic strokes — Caused when a weak area of a blood vessel bursts, causing blood to be diverted to unintended areas.
- Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) — Often referred to as "mini strokes," are caused by a temporary blockage of the artery, and do not leave permanent damage to the brain. TIA symptoms usually go away within 24 hours, but because the symptoms can be similar to a stroke, they’re often treated the same as stroke.
Neurointerventional program
Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center offers advanced and the highest quality of care in the treatment of neurovascular disease. The mission of our neurointerventional program is to provide neurovascular services to our community including diagnostic catheter angiography, open surgical and endovascular neurosurgery of cerebrovascular diseases and neurocritical care.
Neurointerventional procedures offered at Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center
- Diagnostic cerebral angiogram
- Spinal angiograms
- Brain aneurysm treatment
- Intracranial angioplasty and stent placement

Stroke education and prevention
Reduce your risk for stroke
To help reduce your chance of having a stroke, take the following actions:
- Get blood pressure checked regularly and work with your provider to manage if it is too high
- Don't use recreational drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and amphetamines
- Limit alcohol consumption (no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women)
- Follow a healthy diet, limiting saturated fat, trans fat and sodium (salt)
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Don’t smoke or vape; avoid secondhand smoke
- Work with a doctor to take steps to keep chronic medical conditions under control, including high cholesterol and diabetes
Stroke signs and symptoms
If someone is showing signs of a stroke, remember to B.E.F.A.S.T.:
- Balance — Does the person have a sudden loss of balance or dizziness?
- Eye — Has the person had a sudden loss of vision or double vision in one or both eyes?
- Face — Watch for facial drooping. Ask the person to smile and check if one side of the face droops.
- Arms — Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech — Listen for slurred speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Can they do it?
- Time — If you notice any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Even if the symptoms go away, you should still call for help.
Be sure to note when symptoms first appeared and never attempt to drive yourself or a loved one to a hospital. Always call for an ambulance so treatment can begin immediately.
Nevada's first brain surgery performed at our hospital
Our hospital is the first in Nevada to use the "Pink Drink" for brain surgery. This causes brain tumors to turn fluorescent during surgery, helping surgeons remove even more of the tumor.
